CLINT EASTWOOD'S LIFE
Welcome to the website of Clint Eastwood, an Academy Award winning American actor who became a popular icon through his western film roles made during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Clint Eastwood is Born
Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, California, to Ruth (née Runner; 1909–2006) and Clinton Eastwood (1906–1970).
Acting Debut and Rawhide
During this period, Clint Eastwood made his acting debut and gained initial recognition through his role as Rowdy Yates in the popular television series "Rawhide." The series aired from 1959 to 1966, and Eastwood's portrayal of the rugged and taciturn cowboy garnered him widespread attention and laid the foundation for his future success in the entertainment industry.
Spaghetti Westerns and stardom
In late 1963, Eastwood's Rawhide co-star Eric Fleming rejected an offer to star in an Italian-made western called A Fistful of Dollars (1964), filmed in a remote region of Spain by a relatively unknown director, Sergio Leone. Richard Harrison suggested Eastwood to Leone because Harrison knew that Eastwood could play a cowboy convincingly. Eastwood thought the film would be an opportunity to escape from his Rawhide image. He signed a contract for $15,000 in wages for eleven weeks' work, with a bonus of a Mercedes-Benz automobile upon completion. Eastwood later said of the transition from a TV western to A Fistful of Dollars: "In Rawhide I did get awfully tired of playing the conventional white hat.
Directorial debut and Dirty Harry
During the period of 1970 to 1989, Clint Eastwood made an indelible mark on Hollywood both in front of and behind the camera. His directorial debut came in 1971 with "Play Misty for Me," a psychological thriller that showcased his talent not only as an actor but also as a filmmaker. Concurrently, Eastwood took on the iconic role of "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the film series beginning with "Dirty Harry" in 1971. The character, known for his tough and unorthodox methods, became synonymous with Eastwood's rugged persona and solidified his status as a leading action star of the era.
